Why join the Community Group?
In May 2014 Abbotts Barton Community Group became a formal entity (which allows us to apply for grants) and as such we are required to have a membership list. Having members also increases our influence when meeting people such as Council officials, as it shows that we are representing a larger group of residents. Join us if you are interested in making a difference to your local area and meet like-minded people!
I thought I was a member already?
Until July 2015 we counted everybody who signed up to receive our blog posts by email as a member. After some thought we decided that this was not an ideal solution as it might stop some people from becoming members if this meant they had to receive our automated emails despite somebody in the household already getting those. We also wanted to be able to differentiate between members (residents of Abbotts Barton) and friends (not a resident of Abbotts Barton) which meant we needed more details than just an email address. With all this in mind we have now set up a membership registration process that is independent of the blog subscription. We will contact everybody who is on our current list and ask them to confirm their membership by registering properly. Of course you can do this at any time, no need to wait for a prompt!
What does membership involve?
Being a member can involve as much or as little participation as you wish, and there is always the opportunity to opt out at any stage. The aims of the Abbotts Barton Community Group are to:
- Assist Abbotts Barton residents in finding out about any local issues that might affect us.
- Help Abbotts Barton residents get involved in the local community.
- Find out how we can make where we live even better – and do something about it!
We would like the members of the group to support us in achieving these aims. This would usually be by receiving our communications (either by email, or online via website subscription, Facebook, Twitter, or simply by checking the noticeboard) as well as letting us know your opinions about local issues and the direction of the group.
Members have the right under the law and our constitution to:
- vote at general meetings and take important decisions such as appointing trustees
Each member has one vote.
Community Group members can stand for election as a trustee, which would give you much greater involvement in running the group.
We always welcome people to join us, it's easy to register as a member and there is no obligation to do anything!
If you would like to help, please indicate your areas of interest on the registration form (for more information about what type of help we may need, please see our Get Involved page).
Membership is free.
Who can become a member?
Membership is available to all residents of Abbotts Barton who are 18 or older. Please see our map for reference. If you are close by and would like to register with the group we will assign you the status of a Friend of the Abbotts Barton Community Group.
