This website has been created for the residents of Abbotts Barton and surrounding areas so that you can keep up to-date with what's going on.

Apart from news you can find information about events, campaigns, and how to contact councillors.

Abbotts Barton Community Group is a community association which serves the people of Abbotts Barton and aims to act as a community anchor organisation. The main areas of work for the Group are:
  • ☐ To enable residents to find out how we can make where we live even better and do something about it.
  • ☐ To run events and activities for the benefit of inhabitants of Abbotts Barton.
  • ☐ To strengthen community participation.

We always welcome people to join us, it's easy and free and there is no obligation to do anything! Please see our Membership page for more info!

If you should be interested in helping out at events, as a street champion, or as a Councillor's Surgery visitor, please don't hesitate to get in touch! Get Involved

Do you have a few hours to spare during the month? We always appreciate a helping hand so contact us if any of the voluntary activities we have appeal to you! There are many good reasons to volunteer, for example to use or develop your skills or to meet new people. You can give as much or as little time as you want to. We are also keen to hear from you if you have your own ideas. If you can help please contact us either via our Contact tab or simply speak to us when you see us!

Here are a few examples of opportunities for volunteering we have:

Picnic In The Park

When? First Sunday from May to October, from 12 noon to 3pm. (This can be split up amongst several people!)

Where? In the park in Abbotts Barton at the picnic benches near the playground.

What needs doing?
  • Pick-up items from storage, set them up and welcome people taking part. Tidy up afterwards and store away all items. (Can be split up between parties so you don't have to stay the full three hours!)
  • We would also be happy for anybody who would like to offer arts and craft activities or to organise games.

Big Lunch

When? The event is on Sunday 7 June from 12 noon to 3pm.

Where? In the park in Abbotts Barton, nearer to the Charles Close side.

What needs doing? We need people to set up gazebos, blow up balloons (two balloon pumps available), hang bunting, carry tables and other items to the location.

Grants Lead

When? Whenever grants become available through different organisations (mainly councils). This doesn't seem to happen very often in each calendar year - in the last twelve months we did two appliations.

Where? At home, research to be done online.

What needs doing? Actively looking for and applying for grants on behalf of the community group. We can help with showing how we have done previous applications.

Fundraising Role

What needs doing? We need help with securing funds or donations for group activities.

Helpers for a car boot sale that we would like to organise this year (to help raise funds for the group)

When? To be decided.

Where? Cattle Market car boot sale.

What needs doing? Actively looking for donations from the community, collecting them and transporting and selling them on the day. This can be shared by several people.

Community Plan Assistance

When? Over the next months - whenever you have free time.

What needs doing? Winchester City Council have asked us to help develop a community plan. Having an agreed plan gives the community a better footing when working with the Council on future projects in the area. The plan is so far based on the 2012 consultation event feedback that came direct from Abbotts Barton residents, and as a lot has happened since then we need to update what has been put together so far. Once the document has progressed somewhat we will work with the community to get feedback on how we have captured what people want. This project is still in the very early stages and it will progress very slowly due to time constraints on our end. We need help with updating the document and once that is done also with engaging with the community.

Street Champions

When? April time.

Where? All over Abbotts Barton (distribution should only be on a few roads per person).

What needs doing? We like to have as many street champions as possible to distribute our newsletter (this will help lighten the load for everybody involved).
